Miami named the "Foodie" City of 2023

The city of Miami has been named the "foodie" city of 2023 by the renowned food publication, Bon Appétit. The magazine has highlighted Miami as the mecca of food due to the wide variety of original restaurants the city offers. The editor-in-chief of the magazine, Dawn Davis, writes that while the editors traveled around the country in search of new and bold places to eat, they admitted that the only place they always wanted to go back to was Miami.

"The city, in constant evolution, is full of opportunities, and a wave of creative chefs and restaurateurs have captured that sense of possibility," she writes. "It has given rise to a wave of bold and exciting restaurants that are contributing to the city's rich culinary history while bringing completely new dimensions to the culinary scene".

The magazine highlights several trendy places in Miami, calling them "restaurants that stole our hearts." The first on the list is Itamae, the Peruvian-Japanese restaurant in the Design District that was designated a Bib Gourmand (restaurant that offers great value for money) by the Michelin Guide last year. The seafood image on the cover of the magazine was taken at the restaurant, which started as a vendor in the former St. Roch food hall (now called MIA Market).

The magazine also praises other Miami spots such as Suite Habana Café in Wynwood, El Turco restaurant in Upper Buena Vista, the beloved southern brunch spot Rosie's in Little River, Zak the Baker in Wynwood, the cocktail bar Broken Shaker at the Freehand Hotel in Miami Beach, named one of the 50 best bars in North America in 2022, the wine bar and pizzeria Paradis Books & Bread in North Miami Beach, and Jaguar Sun in Miami, named by Yelp as one of the best restaurants in the country earlier this year. It also recommends that potential diners try Lil Greenhouse Grill and Red Rooster in Overtown, Michael Beltrán's Ariete with a Michelin star in Coconut Grove, and Doce Provisions and Azúcar Ice Cream Company in Little Havana (there is also a new location in Suniland for Kendall ice cream enthusiasts).

Miami has long been known as a culinary destination for its Caribbean and Latin American cuisine, but in recent years, a new wave of chefs and restaurants have emerged that are redefining the city's culinary scene. The city has experienced an increase in its economic prosperity, which has led to the opening of new restaurants and the arrival of chefs from all over the world.

The city has a large number of high-quality restaurants, some of which have received international recognition, such as the Bib Gourmand award from the Michelin Guide or the James Beard award. One of the restaurants highlighted by Bon Appétit is Itamae, a Peruvian-Japanese restaurant located in the Design District. This Asian-Latin fusion restaurant is a family-owned business that has been led by Nando Chang, his father Fernando, and his sister Val Chang Cumpa.

Another standout restaurant is Suite Habana Café, a stylish café in the Wynwood neighborhood that specializes in ecologically produced and locally sourced Cuban coffee. It is also a small family-owned business that has won the hearts of the local public.

El Turco is a small Turkish restaurant located in the Buena Vista neighborhood, decorated in the style of the Mediterranean country. This place is a must-visit for Turkish food lovers and is especially popular on Sunday afternoons.

Zak the Baker is a popular bakery in Miami that has been recognized for its organic and largely gluten-free products. While they also offer some salads, their specialty is fresh bread, which has attracted a large number of customers who don't mind waiting in long lines to get it.

Meanwhile, Red Rooster is an Overtown classic, serving classic American home-style food. Despite being in an unsafe area for some time, the owners have managed to keep it open, and today it is one of the city's favorite restaurants.

Ariete is another restaurant highlighted by Bon Appétit. Located in Coconut Grove and headed by renowned chef Michael Beltran, this restaurant has earned a Michelin star and has become one of the city's most popular places to enjoy an elegant and delicious dinner.

Finally, Azúcar is an ice cream shop located in Little Havana that has become a city classic. Its name refers to the phrase "Azúcar!" by Celia Cruz, and its artisanal ice cream is famous for being one of the best in the city.

In summary, Miami is a city with a wide variety of culinary options that has been recognized by Bon Appétit as a "foodie" city.
