Can the Rally return to Córdoba, Argentina? “It can come back” (Speaking from experience: David Eli)

(By Soledad Huespe and Infonegocios Miami ) This year, the World Rally Championship (WRC) will take place in Chile, but the big question many fans are asking is whether Argentina can once again host this iconic event. David Eli, a historic organizer of the world championship in our lands, makes it clear. Under what conditions?

Eli is clear in pointing out that the possibility of holding the World Rally in Argentina (WRC, which stands for World Rally Championship) largely depends on the time of year.

“If it’s during this time [late August, September, and October] when the promoter wants to hold the rally, it can’t be done in Córdoba, for obvious reasons,” he explains.

The frequent wildfires during this season, along with an emergency law that prohibits large-scale events in the mountainous area, make organizing the Rally during these months unfeasible. “It would be suicide to hold an event like this, which covers three valleys, and could cause simultaneous wildfires,” he adds.

  • However, Eli views the possibility of the Rally returning to Argentina with optimism if it could revert to the traditional dates of April or May, when the weather conditions are more favorable. “If the promoter changes their calendar, we can justify holding it in April or May, when there is still moisture from the summer rains,” he points out.

Furthermore, he highlights that Argentina has a rich rally culture, with one of the most passionate audiences in the world, which could make the event’s return viable if logistics can be adjusted.

  • Eli clarifies that negotiations for the Rally to return to Argentina are in the hands of the Automóvil Club Argentino, with the support of the provincial government, although he acknowledges that logistical challenges, such as the movement of shipping containers carrying equipment, remain a barrier. “Maritime transport has changed a lot since the pandemic, which has increased costs. But I believe the situation is different now, and a solution can be found,” he states.

  • The final word on the return of Rally Argentina seems to depend on the promoter and how international calendars and logistics are adjusted, but for Eli, “it can come back because Córdoba meets all the conditions.” The challenge? For the promoter to “ease up” on the date.
