Miami to have a new area code: 645

(By InfoNegocios Miami) Miami-Dade County is set to receive a new area code, 645, alongside the existing codes 305 and 786. This development comes in response to the significant increase in new residents in South Florida. The introduction of the new area code aims to accommodate the growing demand for telephone numbers in the region. It will be implemented starting from August 2023.

The iconic 305 area code, famously associated with Miami-Dade and even adopted by the renowned resident Pitbull (Mr. 305), only represents half of the telephone numbers in the area. The other half begins with 786, forming the 10-digit phone numbers commonly used in the region.

With the rising number of people choosing to relocate to South Florida, the available combinations of 10-digit numbers starting with 305 or 786 are becoming limited. As a result, the Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) has announced the implementation of the new area code, 645, this summer.

Existing Miami residents will not be affected by this change. However, starting from August 4th, individuals obtaining new phone lines in Miami-Dade County or the northern part of the Florida Keys may receive a 10-digit number beginning with 645.

It is important to note that the introduction of the new area code is an overlay, meaning it is added to an area that already has existing codes. As such, individuals who already have assigned numbers can continue using them without any issues. This is similar to the incorporation of the 786 code alongside the pre-existing 305 code back in 1998.

The demand for a third area code in a specific region is a testament to the growing economy of South Florida. Miami-Dade County and the Florida Keys continue to attract new residents from across the United States and around the world. The addition of the 645 area code ensures that the demand for new phone lines is met, as stated by Andrew Giles Fay, the President of the Florida PSC.

The introduction of the new area code will not affect call rates or coverage. Calls made between numbers starting with 305, 786, and 645 will be considered local calls, with no significant impact on consumer costs. Most phone plans in the country do not incur additional charges for calls made within the United States.

Furthermore, emergency calls to three-digit numbers such as 911 (police, paramedics, and firefighters), 211 (community services), 311 (municipal services), 411 (directory assistance), and 611 (phone service issues) will remain unchanged, regardless of the initial area code of the phone.

Miami continues to evolve as a thriving metropolis, and the addition of the new area code reflects its growing population and vibrant economy. The implementation of the 645 area code ensures that Miami-Dade County remains well-connected while accommodating the telecommunications needs of its residents and businesses.
