Tech War: Microsoft and Google, the battle for AI leadership

(By Dino Dal Molin and Marcelo Maurizio, from Miami) Microsoft and Google, two technology giants, are competing for the future of online search and driving the development of artificial intelligence (AI). In their recent earnings presentations, both offered different assessments of the degree of disruption that AI will bring to the market. Google executives framed AI as another change in their constantly evolving business, while Microsoft suggested that something much more spectacular is on the horizon.

Who will win?

The integration of OpenAI technology into the Bing search engine has increased pressure on Google to reinvent its core search business. Until recently, Google was considered unbeatable in the online search market, but the debut of the popular ChatGPT chatbot from OpenAI has changed that perception.

In extended trading, Microsoft's stock rose 9.7%, while Alphabet's rose less than 2%, indicating that investors preferred Microsoft's thesis. Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, stated that application installations have quadrupled since the launch of Bing in February and that Bing gained market share in the US in the quarter.

On the other hand, Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet, emphasized that Google is heavily investing in AI, although he downplayed what the technology would mean for the search advertising business, which remains the company's lifeblood. He expressed optimism that users will continue to value online advertising even if their searches yield a summary composed by a large language model, rather than the familiar list of links that Google has delivered for a long time.

As AI continues to transform the world of online search, Google and Microsoft are fiercely competing to lead this revolution. But the competition is not limited to these two technology giants, as other major players in the industry, such as Amazon, Apple, and Facebook, are also making significant advances in the field of AI. Competition in technology is driving innovation and the development of new tools and technologies that will improve the user experience and transform the way we interact with the online world.
