The Ecuador Boom: Cult, but Make It Florida!

(By InfoNegocios Miami in collaboration with Belén Gandolfo Screpante) Ecuador has become a standout in the tourism scene, thanks to its rich array of landscapes, biodiversity, culture, and historical heritage. Moreover, it has experienced significant growth in the hotel sector to meet the needs of visitors.

When it comes to tourism, Ecuador offers a plethora of attractive destinations. The Galapagos Islands, renowned for their abundant marine life and their contribution to Charles Darwin's theory of evolution, are an iconic hotspot. The Ecuadorian Amazon, with its lush rainforests and indigenous communities, draws nature and adventure enthusiasts alike. The Sierra region boasts stunning mountain landscapes, volcanoes, lagoons, and colonial cities like Quito and Cuenca, both declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Finally, the Ecuadorian Coast offers beaches, fishing villages, and the Route of the Sun, a scenic route along the Pacific Ocean.

Speaking of hotel offerings, Ecuador has experienced significant growth in recent years. Numerous high-quality hotels and resorts have been developed throughout the country, especially in the most popular tourist areas. Hotels in the Galapagos Islands provide luxury accommodations and exclusive services for visitors eager to explore this unique archipelago. In Quito and Guayaquil, the country's major cities, there is also a wide variety of hotel options, ranging from boutique hotels to renowned international chains.

Furthermore, Ecuador has embraced community-based tourism and ecotourism, promoting the involvement of local communities in the tourism sector. Many indigenous and rural communities offer homestay accommodations, allowing tourists to immerse themselves in the local culture and contribute to the sustainable development of these communities.

For instance, according to the Ministry of Tourism, Ecuador recorded revenues of USD 480 million during the 10 holidays in 2022. This is USD 94 million more than during the same periods in 2019, pre-pandemic.

Taking these figures into account, the Ecuadorian government has implemented policies to foster tourism and investment in the hotel sector. Tourism infrastructure has been improved, regulations have been established to protect natural and cultural heritage, and national and international tourism promotion initiatives have been launched.

Tips for visiting Ecuador

  • Required documentation: Make sure to have your passport and national identification document ready. While most Latin American countries can enter with just their ID, we recommend bringing your passport as well. This applies to minors as well—everyone should have both their ID and passport.
  • Return ticket to your country: It is a requirement to enter Ecuador. Remember that if you plan to stay for more than three months, you will need to apply for a visa to extend your stay in Ecuador, regardless of your country of origin.
  • Driver's license: To drive a car in Ecuador, you must have a valid driver's license and complete a form to obtain an equivalent Ecuadorian driver's license.
  • Visa: Countries in Latin America do not require a visa except for Mexico, Costa Rica, Cuba, and Honduras. European Union countries and the United States also do not require a visa. If you exceed a stay of 3 months (90 days), you must apply for an Ecuadorian visa without exception at the Ecuadorian embassy or consulate in your country.
  • Visiting the Galapagos: To enter the islands, you must have the TCT (Transit Control Card). You can obtain it at the airports in Quito, Guayaquil, Baltra, San Cristobal, and Isabela by registering at the Galapagos Government Council Office. The TCT costs USD 10, and please note that you cannot stay on the islands for more than three months.
  • Vaccinations: It is not mandatory to have any specific vaccinations to enter Ecuador. However, if you are coming from a country considered endemic (Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela, Bolivia, and Panama), it is advisable to take extra precautions and get vaccinated against yellow fever, typhoid fever, hepatitis A and B, as well as tetanus-diphtheria.

Now that you're equipped with all the necessary information, get ready to embark on an unforgettable journey to Ecuador. Prepare yourself for awe-inspiring landscapes, cultural richness, and a warm welcome from the Ecuadorian people. Enjoy every moment and create memories that will last a lifetime!
