Group Stage Recap: Surprises, Confirmations, and Shifts

Right from the jump, the tournament’s powerhouses and underdogs made their mark. 

 

  • Group A: Palmeiras and Inter Miami fought for the lead, finishing tied on 5 points each. The Brazilians edged out on goal difference. Porto’s surprise elimination came after a draw with Al Ahly. 

  • Group B: A three-way tie at 6 points, with Atlético Madrid and PSG atop. The goal difference favored PSG, who now face Inter Miami in an exciting Round of 16 clash. 

  • Group C: Major upset—Benfica beat Bayern and took the top spot, pushing the Germans to second. Boca Juniors, needing a big win and a Bayern loss, was eliminated after a draw with Auckland City. 

  • Group D: Flamengo shined bright, with wins over Espérance Tunis and Chelsea, plus a draw that secured first place with 7 points. The knockout fixtures: Flamengo vs. Bayern and Benfica vs. Chelsea. 

  • Group E: River Plate was knocked out after losing to Inter Milan on the final day. Monterrey sealed their qualification with a big win over Urawa. 

  • Group F: Dortmund overtook Fluminense after a narrow victory, leaving the South Americans in second place after a final draw.

  • Groups G & H: Juventus and Manchester City each finished with 6 points, with City smashing Juventus 5-2, and Real Madrid topping the group after beating Salzburg.

 

The Matchups: High-Voltage Showdowns Ahead

The brackets are set, and what’s coming is pure strategy, talent, and guts. The Round of 16 games start from the night of June 28 and run into early July, in iconic venues and with global anticipation that goes beyond just the sport.
