Miami is becoming increasingly attractive to Argentinians: Aerolíneas Argentinas and other airlines now offer flights from their Jorge Newbery Airport (Buenos Aires)

(By Belen Gandolfo Screpante) The government has just granted international status to the Buenos Aires terminal, allowing other airlines to fly to the northern country, with Miami being one of the main direct flight destinations. Previously, flights only departed from Buenos Aires' Ezeiza International Airport, but now there will also be flights from Aeroparque, located in the same capital city, known as CABA (Autonomous City of Buenos Aires). This news has been widely spread across all media outlets in Argentina.

In addition to Aerolíneas Argentinas, several regional and U.S. airlines will also be able to operate flights from Aeroparque to New York and Miami. This implies a significant growth in air traffic between Buenos Aires and Miami.

This information comes from Resolution 297/2023, published by the National Civil Aviation Administration (ANAC) in the Official Gazette on Friday, June 2, which allows other airlines to organize similar flights to those that the flag carrier airline will begin operating on August 7.

Currently, Aeroparque handles domestic flights and flights to and from Brazil, Paraguay, Chile, Bolivia, and Colombia. In two months, routes to the northern country will also be added.

Aerolíneas led the way by requesting ANAC to expand the internationalization of Jorge Newbery Airport with regard to the United States, and the aviation control authority accepted the request, allowing Airbus A330 aircraft (with a capacity of 268 passengers) to depart from Buenos Aires to the North American country

ANAC's approval is backed by the ongoing construction work carried out by Aeropuertos Argentina 2000 (AA2000) at the Buenos Aires terminal, extending the runway and building 62,000 m2 of bases and sub-bases with 100,000 m3 of concrete, enabling it to accommodate flights from Airbus A330 or other international aircraft such as the Boeing 787.

Furthermore, by mid-July, the renovations in the so-called North Platform will be completed, allowing for the parking of larger aircraft and relieving the number of remotely parked planes instead of using terminal gates.

The ongoing works required an investment of $5 billion to improve the length and width of the runway, optimizing regional operations and enhancing safety and connectivity.

Following these modifications, Aerolíneas has scheduled flights to Miami and New York, operating on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays with a departure time of 23:30, and three weekly return flights departing at 10:05 and arriving at 20:00 for the first destination. For the second destination, flights depart on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays at 23:55 and return on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays from JFK at 15:25, arriving at 3:25.

For other airlines to be on par with Aerolíneas, they must request permission from ANAC and have aircraft with up to 200 seats and the ability to operate non-stop flights.

"The internationalization has increased regional inbound tourism and the interconnection of these services with its network of domestic flights, thus initiating a process aimed at alleviating an industry that has been globally affected by the COVID-19 pandemic since 2020," states ANAC's regulation in its considerations.
