Threads vs. Twitter: why Twitter stands out with its unique concept

(By Maqueda & Maurizio) In the fast-paced world of social media, Meta, led by the influential Mark Zuckerberg, surprised everyone with Threads, their new application that quickly attracted 100 million users in less than a week. This explosive takeoff led many to think that Threads could be the long-awaited replacement for Twitter, especially after Elon Musk's controversial management of the latter platform. However, upon closer examination, it becomes clear that Threads is not meant to replace Twitter. Here's why:

Limited Search Experience:

  • One of the main differences between Threads and Twitter is their search experience. While Twitter allows users to search for accounts, posts, and trending topics, Threads is limited only to finding accounts. This hinders users' ability to explore and engage in real-time discussions on topics of interest.

Missing Key Features:

  • Threads lacks essential features present in Twitter. There's no trending page to see what topics are dominating conversations, and there are no direct messages for private conversations. Moreover, you can't filter your feed to see posts only from people you follow, making it difficult to stay updated with news and opinions from your closest contacts.

Brand and Influencer Focus:

  • Unlike Twitter, which excelled as a platform for news, current events, and debates, Meta envisions Threads as a space for brands and lifestyle content creators. It's like building an additional wing in their multi-platform shopping center. This might be appealing to advertisers, but it overlooks the essence of Twitter, where the exchange of opinions and citizen engagement were key elements of its success.

Superficial Debate vs. Substantial Discourse:

  • Threads aims to offer a quieter and less controversial space compared to Twitter, where discourse can sometimes turn toxic. However, in doing so, it sacrifices the spontaneity and diversity of opinions that made Twitter a unique platform. Threads' excessive censorship may result in dull and unappealing content for many users.

Is Threads a Viable Option?

Although Threads had a spectacular start, its real success depends on whether users genuinely desire a platform so different from Twitter. While some analysts estimate that it could add billions of dollars to Meta's annual revenue, there has already been a significant decline in user engagement. Will Threads be able to sustain the interest and participation of its user base? Check out this comprehensive report:

Despite Threads' impressive debut, it cannot be considered the successor to Twitter. While Twitter was a space for free expression, debate, and real-time information access, Threads leans towards being a commercial showcase for brands and influencers. The limitation of its features and focus on more superficial content may cause it to lose the magic that once made Twitter famous. The competition for the social media throne is still open, but Threads seems destined to occupy a different place in the vast digital landscape.

Will Threads manage to stay in the social media game? Only time will tell. Meanwhile, we'll continue to monitor the innovations and trends shaping the future of virtual connectivity. What do you think? Do you believe Threads has what it takes to dethrone Twitter, or will it simply be another application in the social media market?
