Today We Reach the 17th Matchday of South American Qualifiers, and the Entire USA and Europe Will Be Watching

(By Ortega) The final sprint toward the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada is underway this week with the 17th matchday (Qualifiers). With several teams still in the race for a spot in next year’s tournament, this round promises strong emotions and pivotal decisions that will remain open ahead of the final day of the South American path.

  1. The matchday will unfold entirely on Thursday, with four games kicking off simultaneously at 8:30 PM and one more at 9:30 PM.

  2. The 10 CONMEBOL member nations (Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela) play a double round-robin, totaling 18 matches per team.

  3. The teams that finish between first and sixth place will qualify directly for the World Cup, while the seventh-placed side will face a playoff against a representative from another confederation.

This Thursday features the five matches of the penultimate round toward the 2026 World Cup.

  • Argentina, led by a comfortable ten-point cushion over Ecuador, has already secured its spot in the next tournament.

  • Chile and Brazil will also feature in one of the most anticipated clashes.

  • Colombia vs. Bolivia will take place at the Metropolitano Roberto Meléndez Stadium in Barranquilla, officiated by Brazilian referee Wilton Sampaio.

  • Paraguay vs. Ecuador will be held at Defensores del Chaco, under the direction of Brazilian referee Raphael Claus.

  • Uruguay vs. Peru will be played at the Centenario Stadium in Montevideo, with Argentine referee Facundo Tello as the lead official.

  • Argentina, already qualified, hosts Venezuela at the Monumental in what will be Lionel Messi’s farewell in front of the home crowd.

All you need to know about the 17th matchday of the Qualifiers

  • The team managed by Lionel Scaloni will receive Venezuela at the Monumental Stadium, with refereeing by Chilean Piero Maza. The match will also mark Leo’s final official appearance for the Albiceleste on Argentine soil.

  • The day’s events will culminate at 9:30 PM in the Maracanã, where Brazil, already qualified, will host Chile, who are eliminated from the tournament. The referee for that match is Venezuelan Alexis Herrera.

South American Qualifiers

  • The Albiceleste sit atop the standings comfortably with 35 points. Their closest pursuers are Ecuador and Brazil, each on 25 points. La Celeste (Uruguay) sits fourth with 24, level with Paraguay but with a superior goal difference (+7 vs +3). Colombia occupies sixth place with 22 points.

  • Venezuela (La Vinotinto) sits seventh and in the playoff zone with 18 points. Colombia holds eighth with 17, while the bottom of the table features Peru (12) and Chile (10).
