(By Molina and Maqueda) Why is it so crucial for Republicans that their voters participate in various forms of early voting? While the popular vote is part of the electoral process, the final outcome of the presidential elections in the United States largely depends on the votes from the Electoral College. In the presidential elections on November 5th, the outcome between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump will hinge on a few key states, but fundamentally on whether Republicans show up to vote—whether through early voting, mail-in ballots, or in-person on Election Day. Many times, due to various reasons, they may not be able to vote on the day itself; hence, it’s vital to do so beforehand if possible. Historically, Democrats have been more strategic and tend to vote early. Despite approximately 240 million Americans expected to cast their ballots, the election outcome will be decided by: a) whether Republicans unite and organize to vote massively on Election Day or do so through various means of early voting beforehand, or b) whether the seven states that determine the election vote for Trump. This phenomenon is due to the Electoral College system, which consists of 538 electors who determine the winner based on the votes in each state.
